EFT Tapping Therapy in Sunnyhills

Also known as tapping, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a ground-breaking method that combines psychotherapy and acupressure, bringing together elements of exposure, cognitive therapy and somatic stimulation.

As it’s a form of psychological acupressure, we tap on acupressure points, which we all have in the amygdala, the stress centre of the brain. All our stressful and traumatic memories are stored in our hippocampus and amygdala. The amygdala is the part of the brain that activates that fight or flight response.

When we experience a trauma that hasn’t been properly processed and sits in the amygdala in a frozen-like state, anything that we come across can trigger that emotion or memory, and we have an emotional stress response to it.

How Does EFT Work?

By stimulating pressure points on the body with this two-finger tapping method, EFT has a calming effect on the amygdala and the hippocampus (the brain’s memory centre), both of which play a role in the decision-making process to determine if something is, or isn’t a threat, and in the fight or flight response.

EFT also seems to have a similar calming effect on cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels can be caused by many factors, including biological stressors, and mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression.

Clinical trials have shown that EFT can quickly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. EFT has a rapid calming effect and can be used by children as young as 3-4 years old.

What to Expect

*Please Note that All Sessions will be Online*

EFT sessions are managed online so that you can relax in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a web cam, speakers and online access.

You’ll be sent an initial form to complete before your appointment. When you meet with Tammy Ockerse (EFT Practitioner) the focus will be on building rapport with you.

She will ask you what she can do for you. Some people will seek help for PTSD, depression, anxiety, social anxiety or lack of confidence. Tammy will then do a timeline. “I’ll ask a patient when they first started to have those feelings.”

This first session will run a bit longer, so that we can expand the tapping process. After that, Tammy will do what she calls a mind map. She’ll map out a form of treatment plan, which will begin at your next session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EFT safe?

It’s considered to be quite safe. We put various safety measures in place, as we don’t want to re-traumatise people. “Our process involves unpeeling the layers slowly so that we don’t cause any new trauma. And then we always ensure that we lead the patient in a safe space before we end the session,” said Tammy.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends; we will have you start with once a week, as we’re dealing with issues that piggyback on other ones. When addressing one issue, you have many aspects, and other issues often arise. Tammy will help you get on top of the major ones.

Can I do the tapping on my own?

Yes. The main aim of EFT is to teach people to do it themselves so that they can manage their emotional responses on their own. Tammy will teach you how to do the tapping so you can perform it outside the practice.

“Once we’ve addressed a patient’s major issues, they’ll have enough knowledge to deal with their everyday stresses and those smaller things that haven’t been dealt with,” she said.

You may only need to return to Tammy if you have any significant issues that require her assistance.

What are the fees associated with the service?

Initial Session: $140
Follow-Up: $140
5 Sessions: $650
10 Sessions: $1200
