Choosing the Right Pillow for You

Woman side sleeping position with pillowHow do you feel when you wake up in the mornings? Refreshed? Achy? Stiff? Sore? Or did you wake with a headache?

If you feel that you are not getting the best sleep at night, it could be your pillow. Pillows play a bigger role in our sleep than we think. As well as providing comfort, the right pillow should provide the necessary support for the neck and spine.

Keeping the spine in the correct alignment helps relieve pressure and counterbalances certain points in the body. Pillows should always support the head, neck, and shoulders. Often pillows can be too soft and lose their shape and support throughout the night.

But with so many choices out there, it’s difficult to make the right choice. That’s why we’ve put together these three important components to consider when purchasing a new pillow:

  1. The size of the pillow should fit your body size. If you have broader shoulders, then you’d need a thicker pillow to support you properly.
  2. The materials used to manufacture the pillow. If you have allergies, then it would be wise to choose a hypoallergenic pillow. Pillows can be made from many different materials so be sure to check the details on the packaging to ensure that it’s what you’re looking for.
  3. Your sleeping position. Different people sleep in different sleeping positions. We will discuss these in more detail below.

We recommend a medium thickness pillow with contours on the side to support your cervical curve while sleeping.

We recommend a slightly firmer pillow with contours on the side. Depending on the width of your shoulders you’ll want to pick the size of your pillow accordingly. Ideally, you want your nose in line with the centre of your neck when sleeping on your side. The contour of the pillow lying against your shoulder will still support your spine while sleeping on your side.

We generally don’t recommend stomach sleeping as it puts a lot of pressure on the spine in the neck. If you tend to roll onto your stomach is as follow:

  • Put a pillow between your knees to keep the pelvis aligned in neutral throughout the night.
  • Hug a pillow to avoid turning onto your stomach.
  • Put a pillow behind your back and roll backward slightly onto it. This can also help to maintain a side/back position, rather than wanting to roll forward.
